Welcome to Edmonds, WAEdmonds, Edmonds, incorporated in 1890, is a south Snohomish County city covering 7.5 square miles of land on 5 linear miles the shoreline of Puget Sound, approximately 14 miles north of Seattle. Edmonds was a well-established town by the turn of the century and the present urban form preserves many characteristics of its historic origins. The community's location on the west-facing slopes of Puget Sound provides many amenities, including extensive views of the water and Olympic Mountains, access to beaches and waterfront parks, and compact downtown area. Edmonds is a great place to live! Meander through the community and you'll see neighbors meeting at the mailbox, jogging or bicycling together. The city's proximity to Highway 99 and Interstate 5 makes it easy to find but hard to leave. Downtown Edmonds excels in specialty retail carrying edgy American designers, classic and romantic attire, children's clothing, and travel apparel. Jewelry and gift shops present an array of unique NW products. One-of-a-kind merchants offer wines, house wares, furnishings, soaps and lotions, candles, jewelry, lace and hand crafted items. Bookstores, art galleries and antique shops featuring French, Italian, English, Asian and Scandinavian treasures welcome browsers. Travelers find guidebooks and luggage just down the street from knowledgeable travel services offering escorted adventure treks. Juxtaposing turn-of-the-century antiques with modern art, Old Milltown, at 5th and Dayton offers interior decorations, an art gallery, antique shop and a fine Asian restaurant. Near the Waterfront, you'll find more shops and the Harbor Square business park. Waterfront restaurants, an antique mall, athletic club, a hotel and professional services grace the surrounding area.
Highway 99 is the modern bustling commercial and service thoroughfare. Like Highway 99, Interstate 5 links Edmonds to Seattle to the south and Everett to the north. Residential Housing Population and Employment Over the last decade, employment within the city has grown somewhat faster than population, increasing about 2.7% per year. In 1990, the city had an estimated 9,263 jobs with the largest portion of those in services (38%). Retail trade and government accounted for 27% and 23% of employment, respectively. Employment is forecast to increase by 3,000 jobs (32.2%) over the period 1990-2012. Transportation The Burlington Northern Railroad runs adjacent to the city's shoreline; the rail line is currently used for freight and AMTRAK passenger rail service. Bus service is provided by Community Transit with three regular bus routes and four peak period commuter bus routes. Metro transit provides direct services to the University of Washington and downtown Seattle. The Edmonds-Kingston Ferry connects south Snohomish County and north King County with the northern Kitsap Peninsula and points west on the Olympic Peninsula via the Hood Canal Bridge. This ferry route has experienced the greatest increase in ridership for all state ferries over the period 1985-1992, with vehicular and passenger traffic increasing 68% and 51%, respectively. A preliminary feasibility study that looked at alternative locations for the ferry terminal concluded that relocating the terminal site to Point Edwards would help to resolve existing traffic conflicts and congestion as well as providing increased terminal capacity. Studies are underway for a multi-modal facility that would incorporate terminals for rail and bus service, park and ride lots, and pedestrian access with a new ferry terminal.
The Port's boat repair facility is the most environmentally advanced in the Puget Sound area and allows boat owners to work on their vessels or use the services of several local vendors. You are encouraged to enjoy the Port's public walkway with a view of the marina, the Olympic Mountains, and the Puget Sound shipping channels. Education in Edmonds Central Washington University, with a branch in Lynnwood, offers degrees in business and law. For information, please call 425-640-1574. Government of Edmonds Climate of Edmonds History of Edmonds Founding Father George Brackett grew up working in the woods of Maine and New Brunswick, Canada. He moved to the Puget Sound region in 1869 or 1870.
Other settlers trickled into the area-loggers, shingle sawyers and weavers, farmers and small businessmen. In 1884 Edmonds opened its first post office, and in 1890 the City of Edmonds was incorporated. George Brackett became its first mayor. During the early 1900s, shingle mills stretched all along the Edmonds waterfront. The number of mills grew rapidly thanks to the availability of quality red cedar nearby. In its heyday, there were ten mills along the waterfront, some cutting almost 20,000 shingles per year. Over time, as the big trees were cut down, mills closed and Edmonds' early character as a mill town faded. The last mill closed its doors in 1951. Today, traces of the City's early days can be seen in many historical sites around the downtown or "bowl" area. The Edmonds Historical Museum is a great place to pick up a walking tour map. Housed in a 1910 Carnegie Library building, the Museum hosts entertaining and educational exhibits. Call 425-774-0900 or see www.historicedmonds.org for information. Edmonds is a highly desirable place to visit. Charming main streets fan out from a central fountain. Promenade around the circle and you'll stroll past sidewalk cafes, art galleries, gift shops, antique shops and bookstores. Spend the day in this very walkable community, where people still greet in passing. Edmonds Historic Development The city continued to grow during the 1940s and 50s, resulting in a more active role of the municipality in providing water, sewer and streets for residential and commercial expansion. The Port district was formed in 1948 and began waterfront improvements. Completion of Interstate 5 and increased growth in the Puget Sound region led to a gradual change in the character of the city with more emphasis on residential development and a decline in the retail importance of the downtown. The City of Edmonds is now primarily a residential community that also provides many amenities for residents and visitors. An active arts and cultural community contributes to the strong sense of civic pride widely shared in the community. There are numerous well-kept residential neighborhoods, a viable economic base, and an active, involved citizenry.
